PLN East Nusa Tenggara Regional Main Distribution Unit (PLN UIW NTT), in partnership with Yayasan Jaringan Peduli Masyarakat (JPM), launched the Water for Agriculture Program in Wee Rena Village, Southwest Sumba Regency. The initiative was developed in response to the challenges faced by local farmers, whose agricultural activities had long depended solely on seasonal rainfall. During the dry season, farmland was often left uncultivated due to limited access to water. Even for growing vegetables and other horticultural crops, farmers were forced to purchase water delivered by tanker trucks at considerable expense.

Through this initiative, PLN UIW NTT and Yayasan JPM introduced a sustainable solution by developing a water distribution network and an electric pump-based agricultural irrigation system. With reliable access to water, farmers are no longer dependent on the rainy season and can cultivate their land productively throughout the year. The program aims to transform traditional rain-fed farming into a modern agricultural system supported by electric-powered irrigation. It also serves as a pilot project, demonstrating how electricity can be utilized to strengthen rural food security and improve agricultural productivity.

Beyond developing water infrastructure, the program also promotes knowledge transfer and behavioral change by equipping farmers with the skills to operate, manage, and maintain the irrigation system. This approach is intended to ensure the long-term sustainability of the facilities and maximize their benefits for the community. The success of the initiative is expected to serve as a model for other villages facing similar challenges.

Ultimately, the Water for Agriculture Program seeks not only to provide reliable water access for farming but also to improve household incomes, strengthen food security, and foster a more resilient and modern agricultural system. PLN UIW NTT and Yayasan JPM believe that well-managed access to water is a fundamental driver of productive, sustainable agriculture and a better future for the people of Wee Rena Village.
